Samantha Canales is an award winning writer and photographer who settled in the dusty climate of California’s Central Valley nearly twenty years ago.  There is no doubt that the Steinbeckian setting, both past and present, are a huge influence on her work, but the wild dog of her imagination goes far beyond place.

Her storytelling has elements of magical realism, but her characters experience these moments as pure realism, at times beautiful and often harsh. It is in between the welcomed confines of the literary short story that she feels both the freedom and the boundaries to give her characters the best chance to be themselves in heart, flaw and longing.

She is currently completing a collection of short stories that revolves around the surprising history of a disappearing lake in the middle of California.

A photo/installation exhibit is in the works for mid 2017 featuring works created with vintage cameras, including toy and spy cameras, depicting depression era style imagery set in modern day, rural California.
